Perhaps you answered this later in your article but as an Anabaptist I had to laugh at the thought that Baptists were assuring they weren't Anabaptist because "We are a people with convictions grounded in the Bible, on believer’s baptism, and on congregational church government." That is exactly what Anabaptists believe.
Ask Goggle “how many Christian denominations are there?”
If you do it today you’ll probably go down a Google path that will lead you to answer of “45,000”.
What is the source of the problem? Theologians and isms. It is time for us to get back to the Bible.
Romans was written to Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians. Romans chapter 16 was written to the one and only denomination at the time (57AD ?). A church of maybe 300 in a city of about a million. But although they met in 4-5 house churches, they had e everything in common. Paul was instructing them that neither Jew or Gentile should judge the other.
Today we have no concern for the church 500 feet down the street. After all, they are of a different denomination. But it appears to me that people are leaving Calvinism because it is unbiblical, while Calvinists are realizing the Spiritual gifts are for today. (It’s not just for John Piper). Some of the KJV only people have become have become ESV only. The ESV has as its General Editor a guy by the name of Wayne Grudem. Wayne Grudem understands the gifts are for today….see his YouTube video.
There are two things the reformers did not reform…
-infant baptism (see John MacArthur’s explanation or the many other’s)
-and that the church (the Catholic church) replaced Israel
Both of these stuck with the Reformers and they didn’t fix them
When we finally realize that Spurgeon was not a Calvinist and Jacob Arminus was, we can correct the false dichotomy. You are neither a Calvinist or an Arminian.
Everyone who showed up (in the flesh) for the Synod of Dort was a Calvinist arguing about Calvinism.
The reformers were correcting the Papacy, but the Eastern Orthodox Church had already done that. Martin Luther was instructing them regarding the four or more times the Bible stated that the righteous will leave by faith. We commend him for his courage, not for his writings. “On the Jews and thier Lies”. He wasn’t sure about four books in the New Testament and the Millennium would be real if it happened in his (chronos) life time.
The Ana- Baptist’s saw things that were in the Bible and things were not.
Adults were baptized and infants were not. Jesus nor the Apostles did not teach it, nor suggest it. But St Augustine did. (the great theologian grandma said “if its new it’s not true)
Tertullian was very upset that infant baptism began. Even the author of TULIP stated none of this was taught until the 4th century.
So why does Israel even exist if it has been replaced by the church?
Because it was written.
So now, 2000 years later, we see Israel being gathered back together in unbelief to restore the land. (The one and only meaning of “Zionism’). That too was prophesied. But though the land belongs to God and never to be divided, it was given to Israel (the family,/people/nation) FOREVER. Deuteronomy 30:1-5, Jeremiah 23:7-8, Jeremiah 30:11, Romans 11:1-2.
Two denominations is one too many…. “There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”
Ephesians 4:4, 6 ESV
So now we see Israel being gathered and denominations being molded into one
Why are denominations bad? They are demonimated as parts of the whole? It's a way of organizing worship that, by its very definition, requires a view of being part of the whole church.
Bro, I think I found the problem! You never know what you're going to get if you ask Goggle to drop some knowledge on you. Goggle is really good at preventing water from getting into your eyes, but not as good when it comes to obtaining accurate information. Personally I'd guess Google, Gemini, ChatGPT, and the like are better at the knowledge game than Goggle. Just a word to the wise. :)
Who is the well-known Baptist? That’s the whole reason I clicked on this.
